Mosiac Tiles for Light and Color

It’s early January and I’m feeling the pinch of winter already. I miss dry and warm days in the garden. When I look out my window and see my maple bare of leaves I long for spring.

If you’re like me, be of good cheer. I have found a wonderfully simple way to stir warm memories while preparing for those spring days and bring the nuances of light and color into your home in the form of mosaic tiles.

We carry wonderful mosaic products from Mosaic Mercantile including mosaic tiles, tools and more. In this project it is taking a simple flower pot and creating an exceptional mosaic pot as a wonderful home for your Paper Whites or other plants of your choosing.

Mosaic Tiles:
• 2 - 24-tile bags of Meadow Gold
• 2 - 24-tile bags of Dew
• 2 - 24-tile bags of Jade
• 1 - 8 oz. jar of Premixed White Grout
• 1 - 4 oz. bottle of Adhesive
• 1 - Applicator Set
Other things you will need: (not included with above items)
• 4" clay flower pot with 3/4" rim
• Mosaic Tile Nipper
• paper towels
• water container
INSTRUCTIONS:

Designing and Gluing

1. Begin gluing the Meadow Gold along the rim.
Dab a little glue on each of the four corners of each tile and carefully place tile on rim of flowerpot.

Center the tile along the rim, a little below the top edge.

Mosaic Maestro Tip: take time to study the metallic patterns on the tiles, and place them in the direction that seems to "flow" in the best way.

And remember: an even, narrow interstitial space is the most pleasing to the eye!

2. Continue gluing down the tiles until the rim is covered.

The last tile may need to be nipped to fit.

3. Next, nip some of the Jade, Dew, and Meadow Gold tiles into attractive shapes.
Glue them onto the base of the pot so that they fit neatly together and the colors are evenly distributed.
Continue working until the whole pot is covered in an attractive "crazy quilt" design.

4. While the adhesive is still wet, tiles can be shifted with a craft stick until you are satisfied with the positioning. The adhesive will begin to dry within 5 to 7 minutes. Do not attempt to reposition the tile after the adhesive begins to set.

The adhesive dries clear and can be peeled off, so don't worry if you get a little on the visible side of the tile. Make sure to keep your hands clean and free of adhesive while applying tile. Wash hands as needed.

5. Allow the tiles to dry for at least 12 hours - we recommend overnight.

Grouting

1 Fill a container with water and have handy plenty of paper towels. Run strips of masking tape along the inner sides of the pot to keep off the grout.

2 Using the red plastic Grout Spreader Tool, scoop out grout and spread it over the tiles and into the 'crevices' between the tiles.
Mosaic Maestro Tip: Be gentle - you don't want to loosen tiles. If a tile should become loose, apply more adhesive to the tile and reapply to the base. Continue grouting around the repaired tile, making sure not to dislodge it again.

3 Work the grout into the crevices until it becomes smooth and level with the tile surface. The best way to do this is by spreading the grout in one direction and then spreading it in the opposite direction. When you have finished applying grout, wait about 15 minutes for it to harden slightly.

4 Dampen the yellow Grout Sponge with cool water and squeeze it. The sponge should be damp, but not soaking wet. Gently wipe the dampened sponge across the tile surface, removing excess grout from all surfaces. Wash out the sponge periodically while cleaning tile, as it really soaks up the grout.

5 Allow to dry overnight. Gently loosen any remaining excess grout from tile with a wooden craft stick. Gently polish tiles with a paper towel or cloth. For extra shiny tiles, polish with a small amount of vegetable or olive oil.

We have wonderful new products for you to explore, and this time they are eatable. When LorAnn’s candy-making supplies arrived, I rushed right home to make a batch of cinnamon candies. It was fun, easy and delicious.

My family gobbled up some samples, and I took the rest to share. Unfortunately they were a big hit and I didn’t get a photo of my first homemade candies. These lemon suckers are next on my list.

Remember, a Little Goes a Long Way with LorAnn's Super Strength Flavors for Baking and Candy Making. Their candy flavors are 3 to 4 times stronger than grocery store extracts. (When substituting LorAnn’s flavors for extracts, use 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon for 1 teaspoon of extract. Approx. 1 dram = 1 teaspoon.)

Decorative Shawl

I wanted to introduce you to this fabulous yarn. The quality is superb, and there is nothing quite like it.

This scarf turned out quite amazing ... and much better than this photo shows. The details of the yarn's embellishments capture attention and enhances the shawl completely.

I was afraid that it may be a bit more difficult to knit around the wooden beads, but it went very smoothly.

There is a great assortment of colors for this yarn. (see right insert.)

Stylish Clutch

This clutch may seem advanced, but with a bit of patience and time, you too can create a wonderful knitted clutch or small purse.

For those of you with a bit of knitting fear, rest assured, you can do this ... and I will be happy to help you along the way.

If one were to tackle this purse on their own, I would qualify it as an intermediate project.

Here I've actually knitted two yarns together to make the clutch. Both Vanna Glamor Onyx and Eros II in purples were used.

I took a nicely matching cotton batik then machine-sewed it around a sized-piece of plastic canvas. Then I snuggled it inside the clutch. This strengthens the clutch and keeps it to form. I kept the form unattached for easy cleaning.

To finish, I braided I-cord to make the handle, then sewed it on the clutch. Finally I used a magnetic button clasp with silver button, which clamps on easily but securely. It really gives the clutch a finished look.

This clutch is on display at the store. Come on in to view it and explore options for a purse of your own.

New Papers!

I know it's the Christmas season, but I've just had to tell you about our newest paper groups from Kaisercraf.

"Bonjour" is a Paris-themed group in mostly soft pinks and greens. Some of the papers have glazing and foil on them, and the group comes with a nicely-done chipboard sticker sheet. The Eiffel Tower die-cut paper is particularly lovely.

"Sweet Nothings" is all flat papers but they're so beautifully designed in a classic Victorian scrap style that you won't mind embellishing them yourself. The die-cut pack is simply mouthwatering and the 6 x 6 specialty paper pack includes several pages of small die cuts in the back - perfect for all you Card-Makers out there.

As you can tell, I'm totally impressed with these two newest offerings from Kaiser craft and I can't wait to show them to you all.

Christmas time can be a romantic affair. I love the color of blue shimmering lights against white. Perhaps it is the nostalgic feeling these colors convey and it is also reminiscent of wonderful Christmases past.

In search of that magical Christmas feeling that brings comfort, joy, hope and family together, I found a perfect blend of products that not only conveys the best of Christmas, but also fits my budget and my time limitations.

One of my favorite memories as a kid was receiving a fresh new intricate image to color. Tens of years later (and I won't say exactly how many), I can still recall the images I colored.

I remember the underwater scenes with dolphins and brightly colored fish. There was another one very similar to the kitten shown here (insert left), amid a flurry of flowers. Others like horses and unicorns come readily to mind.

Tatted Candle Frill and Ornament

Haven't you noticed that the smallest items can make the biggest difference?

Quality cannot be fudged ... and that also applies to quality yarns and handwork.

This candle frill and ornament cover was done in the exacting and delicate work of a tatting needle - although a shuttle could have also been used.

These items were made with our new size 10 metallic thread. I have to admit that the metallic was a bit more difficult to work than normal, but the results were an updated look on a stunning art.

Crochet Ski Hat

I love this ski hat. The colors are great, the look is great, and ... even if you cannot see them ... the ties are long and have great tasseled ends similar to the top tassel. (See right inset.)

I wish I could claim this great crocheted hat, but I have to give credit to Jan. Her talents are unlimited, and she new just the right colors to use to set off this hat's great design.

The yarn used is a Lion Brand Yarn called "Woolies" (worsted weight) and we have this popular pattern available in the book "Hooked on Crochet".

This is the same style you'll see up and down the ski slopes. They make a perfect Christmas gift, so visit us soon to pick out your perfect yarn.

Knitted Christmas Stocking

This design comes from a pattern in the "A Cuff Above" book. You'll appreciate the well-conceived design that will take an intermediate knitter about 5-6 hours to knit using a stranded knitting stitch.

Beaded & Knitted Christmas Ornaments

These knitted Christmas ornaments are perfect to use every year and are perfect for all levels of knitters.

They are knit in the round. As the knitting proceeds the beads must be added. This is easily achieved with a needle and thread then strung onto the yarn.

Once complete, they are gathered up over the glass ornament to finish.

New Sizzix!

We've received new Sizzix products and I really like them! One is the Stamp & Emboss. It includes a cling stamp from Hero Arts and a matching embossing folder. you simply stamp the image on a piece of pater then put it in the embossing folder and run it through your device. (Cuttlebug or Big Shot).

It perfectly outlines your stamped image and it looks really great.
For an even nicer look use the white core colored papers we received in from Penny Black, and sand the embossed outlines! Awesome!

The other new product is ta regular die, but it includes and embossing folder to enhance the die-cut. It creates a very elegant look! There are three Christmas designs in this great combo.

History of Framing Part 3

“The Altarpiece”

In discussing the altarpiece as part of the history of framing, I am going to have to backtrack a little. I knew that this was going to happen eventually and I am sure that it will happen again from time to time as I search for more information on the topic of frames.

Even today, frames can be divided into two major subgroups: First, we have the Decorative Frame, which is most commonly used to “tie the whole room together” or “to go with the furniture.” Second, we have The Shrine, which is made for a specific piece of art. The altarpiece, a very important part of framing history, might be the first time that we see a differentiation.
The altarpiece was first created to be placed on or behind the altar in a church. The subject matter was religious and the image was usually broken up into two or more panels with related content.

Here is an excellent example created by Andrea Mantegna back in 1457. The San Zeno Altarpiece was created in the midst of the renaissance in Italy but the frame is what I am interested in. Four Corinthian columns carved in wood, most likely designed by the artist himself, break up the panels depicting Madonna enthroned. Together with the arched hood and the monolithic base, it is made to look like a temple or monument.

Like most, if not all, altarpieces, the frame and the art are one, united in a perfect marriage of two-dimensional imagery and structural integrity. It is not until later that the frame becomes an interchangeable decoration.

We just receive its new shipment of beautiful dried flowers and assorted sundries.

We have three different colors of mushrooms, thirteen colors of Gypsy Blooms and (my favorite) five colors of Ting Flowers. We also have pods, eucalyptus, broom blossoms, yarrow and more!

These distinctive dries are great to use in any arrangement to bring interest to your home or office. Add them to lighted branches for that extra touch.

Creative Gift Frame Idea

I couldn't decide what to give my husband for our anniversary, so I decided to use one of our wedding photos. (I love this photo of us!) I used a 10" x12" paper mache frame by "Frame Craft" from our Hard Craft Department. (They also carry 12" x 12" sized frames.)

I used decorative paper called "Basic Glitter Paper" by Best Creation.

For the embellishments, I used Prima Flowers. For the lettering, I used Cheeky Shimmer Stickers made by "Making Memories" and for the little silver embellishments, I used our die cut machine using #183. (All of these are found in our Scrapbooking Department.)

You can use these frames for a multitude of gifts, or maybe just a wonderful gift for yourself. I'd love to hear what type of photo you will frame.

Cordless Glue Gun gets my thumbs up

For those of you who love using a hot glue gun for your craft projects, you may have the same problem that most of us have: The cord always gets in the way.

Well now there is a solution: The I-Bond Cordless Hot Glue Gun by Imaginisce!

I used it for the first time when I made a feather hairclip. It worked great! Besides the fact that it was cordless, I was impressed that the nozzle has a finer tip than your normal hot glue gun. The History of Framing - Part 2

Like I said before, there is not a whole lot of information out there about the history of framing. In the world of art, the frame is the underdog. Or, if you will, the frame takes on the role of the ‘best supporting actor.” After all, it is not the frame’s job to be the main attraction.

Much like the modern day “wing-man,” the frame’s job is to make its’ buddy (The Picture) look good. In the History of Framing – Part 1, we discovered that the very first frames were utilitarian at best, not much more than a few pieces of wood nailed together … and it seems to have stayed that way for a pretty long time.

Jumping ahead to the 1600’s, we see that the frame had transformed into a piece of furniture. This was especially true in northern Europe where the Kings and Queens of England were becoming very wealthy and demanded the finest furnishings for their castles.

The image I have chosen is a mirror, circa 1680, framed with a “hood,” (also popular at this time), the mirror was a luxury item. This particular frame is heavily molded with walnut, olive, and oyster shell veneers. Gilded frames would soon take over as the most popular kind of frame in the 1700s.

Framing Fun using Kaiser Craft & Timeless Mini's

In the stationary department we received some new picture frames from Kaiser Craft. There are two different sizes. I decided to do something different using “timeless Mini’s” from Darice.

These are sold in hard crafts. Since it is gardening season, I thought: what a cute way to show off the mini veggies, fruits, and gardening tools.

I added a few stickers made by K & Company, and used 4 different “cooking type” papers for the background.

I simply used Elmer’s glue to glue everything together, with the exception of the water can; for that I used a glue dot.

New Camping Vase

For those of you who were at Scrapbooking Club in August, I have the results of the Plastic Vase Filed Test.

To recap, we got the cutest plastic vases in the floral department and I decided to take one camping with us last weekend.

You see, they’re a flat plastic vase with a gusseted bottom that opens up when you fill it with water. How cleaver is that?! Anyway, we bought a bunch of daisies, filled the vase and Voila! Camping vase!

Of course, to pack, all you have to do is empty our the flowers and water and it returns to its flat, convenient, totally funky shape. And, get this, it only costs $1.49 each! I think it would be great to pack in your picnic basket or even to keep on hand around the house to serve as an impromptu party decoration.

Bottom line: it’s fun, functional, and a fabulous buy!

Canvas Time

I used several canvases, including 2 covered with burlap. I also used a chipboard package (by Bo Bunny), and embellishments by Tim Holtz.

The paper backgrounds are by Bo bunny, Creative Imaginations, and Graphic 45. I wicked over everything with distress inks (also by Tim Holtz).

Things adhere with Meriken Tape.

Before assembling, I sprayed the entire canvas black. Just move things around and don't be afraid to add your favorite items.

New Smash

The July release of SMASH just arrived today! WAHOO! It’s not a lot of items, but hopefully it will tide us over until the rest of the goodies show up in August.

Included in this shipment were three new book designs: Simple Style, International Style, and Eco Style.

Also, there are two new colors of pens: Pink and Blue!

Of course both still have the great glue stick on the other end. I LOVE those pens! This new stuff will go fast, so get in here on the double.

Your Local Lemonade Stand

Sometimes it’s fun to “flip” the easel board and use it like a shadow box. For this project, I painted the box yellow, and then decorated the inside using “Little Yellow Bicycle” paper. To finish it, I placed a miniature mailbox and tricycle to create the look of a diorama. The LYB line, “Lemonade Stand,” has a number of great accents and paper guaranteed to enhance and add interest to any project.

The History of Picture Framing, Part I

When I first decided to write about the history of picture framing, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. As I began looking around at local bookstores, on the Internet, at the library, etc., I found that there was very little information on the subject.

Be that as it may, I have decided to take it on myself to be your framing historian, collecting all of the data that I can possibly pull together.

To start at the beginning might prove to be the most difficult part, but here goes…

The first frame could have possibly come from Egypt circa 200 A.D. At the time, it was en vogue to paint portraits of mummies, aka dead ancestors (See image above:

From WikiCommons: "Fayum mummy portraits is the name given to a large number of paintings from the first to third century. These were tempera or encaustic paintings made with hot, pigmented wax on wooden panels, which were inserted into the mummies of the deceased. The surviving paintings are predominantly from the Fayum region in Roman Egypt, where the practice was common and the dry heat preserved many of the paintings until today."

The portrait was usually a bust (head & shoulders), and when somebody died, their portrait was attached to the cloth that the mummy was wrapped in. These ancient frames were very plain and made out of indigenous woods. The purpose of the frame was most likely to preserve the portrait and keep it out of the way—on a wall or in someone’s home until the mummy had been prepared and was ready for burial.

The Big Shot has Arrived!

The “Big Shot” die cutting and embossing machine from Sizzix has arrived & it’s on sale! We received some cute new dies and embossing folders from Sizzix as well. I can’t wait to try them out!

One of the dies makes a cool 3-D flower that is round and poufy when you’re finished. Another flower die has accordion fold centers for the basic flower shape—really neat looking!

There are also some really cute birds and butterflies. The embossing folders have some pretty designs too—ones that I haven’t seen before. Just in case you don’t own a Big Shot, these are all compatible with the Cuttlebug from Provo.

Elmers Gel Exterior Glue

The Elmers Gel Exterior Glue works fast and strong. I used it on a tree project and noticed a section was crooked after setting the second section 15 minutes later and I could not loosed it to straighten it. I would recommend this for a strong and fast project, like the one pictured.

Using a mat the same color as your wall

A lot of people ask me if it is a good idea to mat their artwork with the same color as their wall. Here are some typical answers:
1) Mat the picture for the art because you might move or repaint, or even put it in another room.
-This might be sound advice but that is a big "might."
2) That is a matter of personal preference.
-Of course this is true as well, but I think that the whole idea deserves an experiment.

Here is a picture I matted:
I choose a toasted almond outer mat to go on a wall of about the same color. I also chose a print that actually goes well with this color. The result is a subtle success that is pleasing to the eye, come see for yourself!

scrapalicious paper party!

Open scrapbooking, May 14th from 10-6pm and will include a box lunch. Cost is $19.00.
Make and takes will be on Sunday, May 15th from 12-5pm and will be happening in four venues throughout the store. (More info on that later) Cost will also be $19.00 OR you can register for both days for only $35.00.

Add color with a paper fillet

A paper fillet goes on the inside of a mat opening,like a regular fillet or the bottom mat in a double mat. Paper fillets are the perfect solution when you want to add a little color to your mat design.
To Make your own paper fillet, first cut one inch strips of mat board that are longer than your opening size.
Next, peel off the top layer (colored paper layer.) Then, when you have four good strips, carefully ATG the paper one 1/8 of an inch from the beveled edge of your mat. For added flair, mitre the corners of your paper edge with an Exacto knife. Put your new, paper filleted mat on your art and see the beauty of what you created.For more on this techniques and other fun mat cutting techniques, come to my beginning mat cutting class every last Tuesday of the month.
